How to Remove Oil Stains

Oil and grease stains are notoriously stubborn because water alone won't touch them — oil and water don't mix. You need something that breaks down the grease first.

Act fast — absorb the oil

Sprinkle the stain generously with baking soda, cornstarch or talcum powder. Leave for 15 minutes so the powder draws the oil out, then brush off.

Treat with dish soap

Apply a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent directly onto the stain. Work it in gently with your fingers and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

What NOT to do

Never rub an oil stain — it pushes the oil deeper into the fibres. Never use hot water on delicate fabrics.
